IRELAND 1916 CENTENARY PROGRAMME IN COUNTY WEXFORD
Preparation
Enniscorthy Town Council formed a 1916 Centenary Committee in 2006 to start a 10
year process of planning and fundraising in preparation for the 1916 celebrations.

Their inaugural Meeting was held on Holy Thursday, 13 April, 2006. The members
of this Committee were Henry Goff, Bernard Browne, Nicky Furlong, Donal Minnock,
Keith Doyle, Peter Byrne, Seán Doyle, Padraig O’Gorman, Eddie Breen. Officers;
Chairman Peter Byrne, Secretary Padraig O Gorman, Treasurer Seán Doyle, PRO
Henry Goff.
The following goals were set.
- The organising of Seminars
- Seeking the support of the Arts Council
- Acquiring The Athenaeum as a Centenary Project
This Committee was later expanded to form the County Wexford 1916 Centenary
Committee.
Local 1916 Sub-Committee
Down through the years the Local 1916 Sub-Committee has held an Easter Monday
Commemoration in the Market Square, Enniscorthy, following the celebration of
Mass in St. Aidan’s Cathedral. This Committee is made up of the following
Members; Ms Breda O’Neill, Ms Breda Donnelly, Ms. Bridget O’Brien, Martin
Whelan, Rory Nolan, May O’ Connor, Paddy Murphy and Councillor Keith Doyle.
