The highlight of the County Wexford 1916 Centenary Programme was the State
th
Ceremonial event in Enniscorthy on Easter Monday, 28 March 2016. This
ceremony formed part of wreath-laying commemorative events that took place
simultaneously at seven locations in Dublin, as well as in Ashbourne, Co. Meath;
Athenry, Co. Galway; Cork, and Enniscorthy Co. Wexford to mark the centenary of
the 1916 Rising. These locations mark where significant action took place during the
Rising.
Over 15,000 people attended the Enniscorthy event, which was project managed by
Wexford County Council with a commemoration parade of over 1,000 participants
led by the Defence Forces and local dignitaries and included over 600 relatives of
1916 participants from County Wexford. The State wreath-laying ceremony was
conducted by the Defence Forces in the Abbey Square, Enniscorthy.
