ENNISCORTHY

Enniscorthy is an old Norman settlement and is situated on the banks of the River Slaney overlooked by the old 1798 battle site of Vinegar Hill. On the west bank of the river, the Gothic church of Saint Aidans reminds us that Enniscorthy is the Cathedral town of the county. Dominating the town is the Norman Castle which was completed in 1205 and now houses the County Wexford Folk Museum. Just down the road by car there are beaches, forest and river walks as well as ancient Dolmens and Bronze Age remains. Enniscorthy and its environs has a well developed crafts industry most particularly in pottery, for which it is justifiably renowned. An attractive hilly town, dominated by a Norman Castle, now a museum and overlooking the river slaney, Enniscorthy is the summer festival capital of county Wexford. Just two of the season highlights are the Strawberry Fair Festival & the Blackstairs Blues Festival. Enniscorthy is also renowned for its pottery industry.

Wexford Town

Wexford Town is an attractive place with Viking and earlier origins dating back to the 2nd century. The West Gate Tower combines with the ancient and historic Selskar Abbey to be the perfect setting to understand the historical development of Wexford. Walk along the many interesting narrow laneways, which run steeply from Wexford Main Street, a narrow, winding street where it is possible for two people to shake hands across it at one point. Shops, pubs, restaurants are plentiful in an off Main Street. Entertainments in the town includes the world famous Festival Opera in October with many seasonal festivals during the summer months. Lively pubs, hotels, and bars often provide quality, live entertainment most evenings. On the outskirts of Wexford Town, the Irish National Heritage Park, which is fittingly, described as the flagship exhibition in the South East traces the journey from man’s first settlements in Ireland up to the arrival of the Norman’s in the 12th century.
